December 2009: Christmas Care
Below are urgent needs that JCF cannot meet without the help of partners. Please prayerfully consider giving towards one of these cases.
A social worker from Tzfat has sent a fax asking if we could help with providing Christmas food baskets for all 22 Lebanese Christian families in Tzfat. They are all toll 100 souls. They are at the bottom scale of the economy basket and even though many of them work all are only earning minimum wage and find it very difficult to make ends meet. To quote Ruthi, the social worker "providing these families with a care package at Christmas will be a very big boost to their morale". The fact that a Jewish social worker is making an appeal for 22 Christian families is extraordinary and we should do whatever we can to meet this need. Cornerstone has helped with this appeal last year partnering with the Narkis Street Congregation in Jerusalem, so let's believe for a miracle. At the moment our South Lebanese fund has almost nothing in it.
Susan has rotting teeth in her mouth and needs immediate treatment. Fillings, root canals and more. For him to begin her treatment she has to pay a deposit of 1,500 shekels. She intends to pay him a little every month from her salary but it would be good to help her with the initial payment. The payment can be made directly to the dentist to avoid, it getting lost along the way. Presently she is on pain killers until she can begin the treatment.
We received an urgent request from our cleaner and gardener of 10 years in our building. He has a son who is very smart and was accepted to Al-Quds University. He came to me with a copy of his ID and student card asking if I knew any church or Christians who could help him with his tuition fee. He has to pay for the first year in 6 payments instead of the 10 payments and his father only earns a salary of 2,500 shekels as a elementary school teacher in Al-Ram. He has been working in French Hill as a cleaner and gardener for 2 of the apartment buildings for the past 10 years as a means to supplement his poor teachers salary. His son is almost 19 years old and is doing an arts course for his first year, because it’s the cheapest course. According to his first year grades he will then be able to choose a major. Ishmael, his father is a very good man and recently lost partial sight in one eye from an accident. He is fearful he may lose his job as a teacher if the authorities find out he has this problem. He is desperate to see his oldest son get an education so he can help his family in the future.
These stories are of families in desperate circumstances, but they are also opportunities to change peoples lives, to give them hope. These families will tell their stories for the rest of their lives and that story will include how God helped them through Christians who gave generously when they heard of their need. This is our chance to bring honor to the name of our Lord by following his commands. Please partner with JCF: pray for these families and give what you can. When we all give our widows mites together we can make a difference.
